Giulio Maresca’s Harsh Enviroment: out now on Resiliens. Q&A.

You guys all know Giulio Maresca and if you don’t you should.
he’s a hell of a dj, a skilled producer, a former label owner at Ipologica Recordings, a radio producer and a sweet and nice guy.

I know him since forever and he was kind enough to partecipate on my Upon Alpacas ep with a great remix.

As I say he used to run Ipologica Recordings with his buddy Fabio Sestili and I had the honour and the pleasure of releasing my very first ep on their imprint.

Few days ago Giulio released this nice ep called Harsh Enviroment on roman electronic label Resiliens.

The ep consists of three originals. They all move around dub techno/deep tech vibes but definetely there is Giulio’s touch as I listen to the tracks: to me his fingerprint consists in an absolute control over the musical elements in the mix plus an outstanding use of delays, but I will ask directly to him what his music is about.

So… welcome to the new session of my blog called Q&A!

Q&A with mr. Giulio Maresca:

Q: How much you like delays, how do you use’em and why?
A: I love delays, I usually use Ableton’s Ping Pong for its flexibility and ease of use. I like Softube’s Tube Delay for the sound and pitch modulation by varying the feedback, and I like the soft distortion it adds. I use also Timeless Fab Filter because it gives a lot of of creative possibilities given by the filters and lfo. Usually I use delays on send channels: Ableton’s Auto Filter on band pass mode with active lfo and random wave form goes before Ping Pong Delay, so the elements that I send to the delay often variate creating interesting patterns.

Q: Did you produce the track in your studio? and if so what’s your studio setup?
A: I mainly use Ableton Live with some external hardware like a Korg ESX, Korg Volca Bass and Volca Beats, an electric guitar and a multi-effects pedal which I use also with the drum machines (Giulio started out as a punk guitarist as myself. yeppa!). When I have the chance to play different synths or drum machines I sometimes sample them for later use. The three tracks were produced in different places, starting on my laptop so to save first ideas than the mixes were finalized in studio.

Q: Which a record that is never missing in your suitcase.
A: Probably PONTAPE’ by Renato Cohen on Intec, one of my favorite records!

“Bye Bye Mademoiselle” by Miriam Macri, including Gabe DM and Mechanique remix

Hey there,

here’s my latest released track. It’s a remix I did for Italian  producer Miriam Macri out on Benthic Recordings. The track is called Bye Bye Mademoiselle and gives title to the Ep wich includes another original track called Hello Mademoiselle and one more remix by Mechanique (also label boss).

For this remix I received the parts from the label but I used little of them, like the pad sound wich I chopped and used a loop of it and the dubby melody that comes in at 5:00 circa.

I used some cricket’s noise I recorded this summer in the wood that you can hear almost through the whole song and some big fly buzz which I also record this summer while working on a live show I did in Viareggio (Tuscany).

I tried to improve my mixing skill and tried to blend smoothly bass and kick drum following all the hints my friends and colleagues gave me on Subsekt.

One word about Miriam and Jaime/Mecanique: they are really nice people and very skilled producer so please take your time to surf the web looking for their stuff, it’s totally worth trust me 🙂

I hope you like the remix I did but also check the whole ep out because all the tracks are very good. Support the label and the artist buying the tracks on web stores, but if you are a dj and want to support the release by playing the tracks in your set go ahead and message me and I will send you the promo pack 🙂

Something Leninist included in IPO//030. a superb compilation

Ipoligica Recordings’ guys are back with this excellent compilation featuring many great producers and friends.

IPO//030 is available now only at beatport Exclusive (bhuuuuu) but will be sold on every major web music store shortly, so for all of you who don’t have a beatport account (or just hate beatport) be patient and wait for your favourite web store to sell this compilation in the near future.

the compilation contains “12 tracks by 12 different artists. A concept where the pure electronic music and experimental (Gianluca Angelini – boss at ANG rec, Giulio Maresca – boss at Ipologica Recordings, Miquel Salla) through the deep sounds (Gabe Dm, Alveol, Enrico Sedda, Yuuki Hori, Gabriele Brunno – boss at NGB) and dub-techno sounds (Ness, Gale Talk) ending up in things hybrid, more acid (Kawatin) and mental (Fabio Sestili – also boss at Ipologica Recordings). An image of a beautiful label that has as a common denominator: the love for the sound class and its roots in electronic music”.

I really like the music in this compilation, particularly the first track scored by Alveol, which is a great producer and a very sweet guy.

I would like to make a special mention to the track called Soundtrack by Giulio Maresca who shows here his more intimate and delicate side, he’s not only a fine techno dj but also a great producer with a good taste and strong technique.

personally I also like the track by Miquel Salla, it’s got good synths sounds, sparkling hats and stompig kick. I also like the Ness’ one it’s got his particular dub touch which defines his style.

my track?…it’s just a piece of vintage sounding sovietic dancefloor stomper 😀 (or at least this is what I imagine sovietic youth to dance in their uniform when they party on the 23 of february for the day of Indipendence). this is it:

comment or criticize it if you feel like 🙂

in the end… the compi is great and you should buy it as a christmas gift for your top quality seeker friends 🙂 I am so proud to be part of it!

Traces Ep is out for Weissaklt/Blauwarm… freedownload!!!

I am very excited to announce my new release for Weissaklt/Blauwarm, superb netlabel from Germany.

The Ep is called Traces and it consists of four tracks. Two dub techno tunes, one electro tunes and a deep and banging techno track!

This is the releases synopsis:
“We left traces behind whenever we act or move or express thoughts and words, sometimes those traces are more intangibles and sometimes more evident. Sometimes when more people are in the same place (like the postal office which is the soundscape in âHad macaroonsâ) the traces are mixed and overlapped in an apparent chaos, more defined are the traces left behind a couple talking in a hotel room (like the protagonists of Ernst Lubitsch’s “Troubles in paradise” who are featured in “Bluffer’s ammunition”), when the baron’s bluff is being unmasked. Traces are also there when a leaf leaves the tree was hanging or a cat is meowing in the street at night. Traces EP is just an attempt of showing the multitude of sounds that are around us without we even notice them, is a declaration of existence of the forgotten sonic elements.”

Weisskalt/Blauwarm is world’s first myspace-netlabel. Quality music for quality listeners.

The label’s boss is also a fine producer (under the names of BHL, Waldfee,) you can listen and download his music from the Wk/Bw’s website.
All the release are free to download.

The tracks were mastered at ARKTIS Studio by Sebastian Fischbeck which is also a solid and great producer under the alias of Boywithoutmemory

I was very pleased when I got contacted to release with them and if you take a musical tour through their releases you’ll understand why, there are so many great artisit on their rooster and good music to listen to.
So people, this is a great opportunity for me and you to meet new and talented musicians!

that’s all for now.
stay fresh and cool!

CIPANGO EP out 29 november on NuTempo.

on the 29th of november my new EP called CIPANGO EP will get released on NuTempo and will be available on every major web stores!

It contains two tracks.
The title track ” Cipango” it’s a minimal techno track with some tiny melodies and driving percussions. The title comes from the word firstly used by Marco Polo in his “il Milione” for the land of Japan.

The second track “Oh Gosh” it’s my first attempt of a dub techno track, hope it worked out good.

both tracks are mastered by Joseph McGeechan at Glasgow based Backwater studio in Scotland and I think he did a great job becasue my mixing technique is still very uncertain.

Finally, I want to thank Adriano Giliberti at NuTempo for believing in my music and for his kind words and enthusiasm – loved when you said we were going to do a sumptuous EP ;).

Later all.
