“Expectations in music are a dangerous road to take”. The music of DVS1

“Expectations in music are a dangerous road to take. You can’t expect anything from this and just do it because you truly love it and get something from playing. I’ve dedicated my entire life to this. I can’t even begin to count the hours, days, years etc…that I’ve spent in search of the beat and rhythm I speak about. I’ve missed holidays, missed birthdays, missed social interaction with people in the normal setting of life all for music. I’m not complaining, on the other hand, I’m just stating the truth, that this takes real dedication. If you give this much to something, it’s bound to give back to you. ” DVS1 for Once Was Now blog.

I am going to catch Zak, aka DVS1 (Devious One) next monday night at AURORA Festival. I will be very happy cause he’s one of my fav artist around.

Long story short: Zak aka DVS1 comes from Minneapolis, midwest US, the city of Prince but also land of grain and agricolture. He gets popular in Europe and worldwide few years ago (around 2009) thanks to Ben Klock and Derrick May. They were the first to releases DVS1 own production on Transmat and Klockworks. Zak has been djing in the underground for years that’s why he owns a huge vinyls collection (more than 10.000 units) and this is why he is so solid, not a parvenue but a very dedicated pro.
He’s the perfect example of contemporary techno artist: both skilled dj and top producer. He likes deep vibes and rough attitude in music. His own tracks are very consistent adding microvariations over arpeggios and a swingy groove with deep basses and a detroitish approach. You can call it detroit techno or deep techno, but to me there is a lot in his music coming from the early NY acid techno. Filters opening up or modulating, his leads never stay still. This is what I like of DVS1’s music: you get energy, deepness and elegance all in one.

this track is called “Confused” and was released On Klockworks in 2011.

and this is a video of DVS1 in action so to get the vibes of Minneapolis gigs and techno scene and to see him at the decks. I think this is brutal 🙂

and this is still DVS1 playing at Scala in London. fancy venue and deep vibes.

I am really proud and happy to be part of this wonderfull group of friends and colleagues. I have been hanging on the forum for one year now and I must say all the ppl involved are really cool and I learned a lot of technical tips and discovered great new music. So if you’re looking for a techno music forum and nice ppl, get down to the Subsekt!

as you know my ep called Perturbation Stolidity has been released two weeks ago and I didn’t get the feeds and the attention I was hoping for, but it’s ok, no prob at all cause I know I am not a big act or anything similar. I just hoped to get some exposure but little by little hopefully will get somewhere. So it’s a real honour to be be included in this awesome mixtape sharing the playlist with Ariff, Arc, Mslwte, Timothy Alexander, Jordan Louis, Ross Alexander, Serial, Twilitez, Filiber, Aphorren, The Binary Mind, Peter Gual, Jake Conlon, Inhuman Impulse and the great Ronny Pries.

For this I thank John, Paul and every other Subsekters.

Have a nice time listening to the tape and see you around.

Upon Alpacas ep out for NGB records: techno and fun or techno and fail?

The 4th of July my new Ep called Upon Alpacas has got released for NGB records.

The ep contains two original tracks: Upon Alpacas and Brides in Line, both are slightly different from my other past releases. I wasn’t very sure of the sound of the tracks so I had to remix them several times in cooperation with Sebastian Fischbeck my dear friends and mastering technician at Arktis Mastering Studio. At the end I was partially satisfied with the result also because I feel my mixing technique is slowly getting better but still not quite good so the tracks didn’t sound to me as I wish. But they passed the check with the label and the ep was scheduled to be released.

I wanted to do some fresh techno tracks for the summer to be played and enjoyed on dance floor everywhere in the world form clubs to festivals to recreation parks. So I made the tracks pumping and energetic full of ideas and different sounds which at the end where so hard to combine that I almost drown myself into it. I always make very clear how hard to me is to close the tracks, it’s not only an intellectual fight is a deep hard physical pain, hours and hours of ear bleeding…daily 🙂

The fact that the ep contained three good remixes actually relief my fear a bit.

The remix are very good, better then the originals I guess. Giulio Maresca’s remix is totally deep and trippy as I like, a coloured journey into little voices and deep basses perfect for the obscure dancefloor we all like nowadays. I am very proud to have a remix done by Giulio because he”s a real sweetheart boy, a hell of a dj and a skilled producer.  Erroi’s one is totally old school with a slow and persistent analogue kick and a machines driven groove, we decided to call it Erroi “rusty kick” remix (you should check Erroi’s techno tracks cause they are real good and soon he will release a Vinyl for Black Catcher records…can’t wait to have it in my collection!

Last remix is from Gabriel Brunno, the label’s boos, which shows is unique progressive techno skills with lots of groove and clean breakdowns,.

I love to think that if the remix are so good it’s for the sample materials I provided them….but they are good because my colleagues know what they are doing 😀

So I will really appreciate if you take your time and listen to the release and give me some feedback and critics.

Cheers all, and have a uber summer, mine is already started and I am doing lots of windsurf with my baby on the shores of Lago di Bracciano. Yeah!

Monopolygamy…Jamie Guerkin gets remixed!

Eat this and take that! The most amorous boyband since Motörhead takes over and endows the world this pack of remixes. Boywithoutmemory (the fancy guy), Kiddo (darling of all mothers-in-law), BHL (the personate dandy), Gabe DM (the Italian Stallion) and Birdy Earns (the last real waltz dancer) are adding more than half an hour of sounds to the great album MONO by Jamie Guerkin.

This release also celebrates the relaunch of Weisskalt/Blauwarm’s myspace- appearance”

The tracks were mastered at ARKTIS Studio by Sebastian Fischbeck which appears in the compilation under the alias of Boywithoutmemory.

remember it’s free to download!!!

Into Chrysalis released in Minitek Vol.1 (JJ Records)

Into Chrysalis” will be released tomorrow for JJ Records on a Beatport Exclusive (it means the first month it will be exclusively available for download on Beatport) along with a splendid remix by my dear friend and skilled producer Erroi.

This is an “old” track I made and Marco remixed (he also did the mastering process) but the release was delayed for a long time, now it’s finally out in a compilation by  JJ Records. I am not totally happy because I wanted a single EP release but… hey, better than anything 🙂

the original track is an acoustic like trip (actually there is nothing acoustic in it, but the overall idea reminds me of something acoustic) with a laid back mood wich makes it nice for a cup of tea at 5 o’ clock with your feet sinking in the river…yep! but then it’s just a weird techno tune with strong bass drum in the second part and a long intro which could be good for mixing with other tracks in a djset.

I hope to get some feedbacks and some new contacts and friends because this is all about 😉

here’s the track!

Traces Ep is out for Weissaklt/Blauwarm… freedownload!!!

I am very excited to announce my new release for Weissaklt/Blauwarm, superb netlabel from Germany.

The Ep is called Traces and it consists of four tracks. Two dub techno tunes, one electro tunes and a deep and banging techno track!

This is the releases synopsis:
“We left traces behind whenever we act or move or express thoughts and words, sometimes those traces are more intangibles and sometimes more evident. Sometimes when more people are in the same place (like the postal office which is the soundscape in âHad macaroonsâ) the traces are mixed and overlapped in an apparent chaos, more defined are the traces left behind a couple talking in a hotel room (like the protagonists of Ernst Lubitsch’s “Troubles in paradise” who are featured in “Bluffer’s ammunition”), when the baron’s bluff is being unmasked. Traces are also there when a leaf leaves the tree was hanging or a cat is meowing in the street at night. Traces EP is just an attempt of showing the multitude of sounds that are around us without we even notice them, is a declaration of existence of the forgotten sonic elements.”

Weisskalt/Blauwarm is world’s first myspace-netlabel. Quality music for quality listeners.

The label’s boss is also a fine producer (under the names of BHL, Waldfee,) you can listen and download his music from the Wk/Bw’s website.
All the release are free to download.

The tracks were mastered at ARKTIS Studio by Sebastian Fischbeck which is also a solid and great producer under the alias of Boywithoutmemory

I was very pleased when I got contacted to release with them and if you take a musical tour through their releases you’ll understand why, there are so many great artisit on their rooster and good music to listen to.
So people, this is a great opportunity for me and you to meet new and talented musicians!

that’s all for now.
stay fresh and cool!

Listen and download some Jeff Mills djsets from 1986 to 2010

Jeff Mills started as a radio dj (aka The Wizard) working at Detroit WJBL radio station along with Charles Johnson (aka The Electrifying Mojo).

At the end of the 80ies Jeff Mills and former Parliament bass player Mike Banks, founded the Techno collective Underground Resistance (UR). Later, Robert “Noise” Hood, joined the collective. UR philosophy was strictly anti-mainstream and was inspired by the Black Panther political movement (as Jeff Mills himself confirmed in some interviews).

Mills then moved to New York, Berlin and finally to Chicago, although he never officially leaved UR collective, he started to produce his solo works. In 1992 he founded AXIS record labels with his friend Robert Hood, investigating a more minimal and modern sound. Also, in the next years, sub-labels were created:Purpose Maker, Tomorrow, and 6277.
source: Wikipedia.

Mills is wordly known for his excellent turntablism skills, here you can check one of his performance with three turntables. , he usually uses up to seventy records in an hour.

Finally, here, you can listen to some Jeff Mills djsets from his beginning at Detroit’s WJLB radio to recent festivals and clubs.

Long live TECHNO!
